Wow, this August is a month of anniversaries!
August 1st marks the 27th anniversary of the recording of my CD Rick Stone Quartet: Far East, featuring Kenny Barron (piano), Don Gladstone (bass) and Curtis Boyd (drums). I had completely forgotten about this, but just received a nice email from Don Sickler telling me that his site https://jazzleadsheets.com/ was featuring my recording of Hank Mobley’s “This I Dig of You” on their video of Jazz Anniversaries (you can see the video here https://jazzleadsheets.com/ ). This was, and still is a recording of which I’m most proud. It was an awesome experience to play with such great musicians and was definitely a landmark recording for me.
Meanwhile another landmark; I’ll turn 60 this month! Come help me celebrate at two Birthday gigs:
The first celebration is in New York at the Bar Next Door where I’ll be on Friday, August 7th playing with two of my favorite musicians; Marco Panascia (bass) and Joe Strasser (drums). The Bar Next Door is one of our favorite venues to play in New York because they create such a welcoming atmosphere and the people really listen. The food is excellent and reasonably priced and the music charge is only $12. The Bar Next Door is located at 129 MacDougal Street (between W3rd & W4th St.) NYC. We play shows at 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30pm. It’s a small venue, so reservations are suggested. Call 212-529-5945 or visit their website http://lalanternacaffe.com/. You can also visit our event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/535508039929543/ and invite your friends!
Then I’m making the drive out to Ohio to visit family and play a second Birthday gig on Saturday, August 15th at Cleveland’s premier jazz room Nighttown where I’ll be accompanied by bassist Dan Pappalardo and drummer Ron Godale. I’ve been playing an annual hometown gig at Nighttown for about 15 years running and they’re always a lot of fun. Lots of good friends and good times! Hope you can make it! Nighttown is located at 12383 Cedar Road, Cleveland Heights, OH 44106. For reservations call 216-795-0550 or visit their website http://www.nighttowncleveland.com/ You can purchase advance tickets here http://www.instantseats.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.event&eventID=926B4D42-9F36-06B0-D38B101D85982801 And visit our event page here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1467608936890017/
This August also marks the 30th Anniversary of my first album (that’s right, a vinyl album, remember those?) Blues For Nobody. I still have a very limited quantity of the original pressing of these and am saving them for someone who really wants them. They are extremely rare and I’ve decided to offer them as a package with all 5 of my CD releases for $100. I’ll also sign them if you like. There are only 20 of these and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Email me privately if you’re interested.
Meanwhile, my teaching site www.JazzGuitarLessons.com is really taking off. Over a thousand subscribers downloaded my first free ebook Scale Studies for Jazz Guitar: 44 Daily Warm-Ups to Build Killer Chops. If you don’t yet have your copy, you can get it here!
