Lots of good stuff going on this summer, but first a little blast from the past: 2014 marks 23 years that I’ve performed at Jim Wadsworth’s venues in Cleveland and I’m posting a few pictures. The first is from Peabody’s Downunder with Marcus Belgrave in 1991. The Peabody’s show was actually part of the larger Tri-C JazzFest where I had the honor of performing with Willie Smith’s Tadd Dameron tribute band and also with pianist Ace Carter. The next picture is from the following year at Rhythm’s Playhouse Square 1992. I’ve performed at one of Jim’s venues pretty much every year since then and always enjoy a visit to my hometown.
Speaking of which, my Cleveland area friends will be glad to know that I will be playing my annual summer gig at Nighttown on Sunday, August 3rd. With me will be Ashley Summers on bass and Ron Godale on drums. These gigs have become a sort of summer tradition and I owe many thanks to Jim for bringing me back year after year. I always try to put together some special music for my Cleveland gig and this one will be no different. So please make your reservations by calling the club at 216-795-0550, or purchase tickets online through InstantSeats. Nighttown is located at 12387 Cedar Road (top of Cedar Hill), Cleveland Heights, OH. Website: www.NightTownCleveland.com
Besides the hometown trip I’ve got some gigs coming up in New York at the Garage on 7/24 and 8/21 and at the Bar Next door on 8/8 and am giving lessons at my studio and via Skype. The weather has been so wonderful that I’m really enjoying just getting some time with my guitar in my garden, but am also getting a lot of work done (I bring the laptop out here and it pretty much becomes my “office” from June-August. We’re working hard to finish the new JazzGuitarLessons.com site (not quite there yet folks, but my developer assures me that we’ll have something ready to test before school starts).
Other big news: After a very long hiatus, I’m setting up my home studio to do some recording again. We had a nice rehearsal here this past Monday with my bandmates Rusty Holloway (bass) and Rob Garcia (drums) and while I’ve got some technical glitches to work out (haven’t used this equipment in a little while) the end results were pleasing. Looking forward to doing more sessions here in the coming months.
Some gigs coming up this month:
Monday, July 14th from 8-11pm, with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks at Iguana, 240 West 54th Street (between 8th Avenue and Broadway).
Thursday July 24th from 6-10pm the Rick Stone Trio with Rusty Holloway (bass) and Rob Garcia (drums) is back at the Garage, 99 7th Avenue South (at Grove Street).
Sunday, August 2nd from 7-10pm the Rick Stone Trio with Ashley Summers (bass) and Ron Godale (drums) plays Nighttown, 12387 Cedar Road (top of Cedar Hill), Cleveland Heights, OH. For reservations call 216-795-0550, or purchase tickets online through InstantSeats. Website: www.NightTownCleveland.com
Friday, August 8th the Rick Stone Trio with Harvie S (bass) and Joe Strasser (drums) plays the Bar Next Door at La Lanterna, 129 McDougal Street (between West 3rd and West 4th). This is hands down our favorite venue in New York. The food is great (and reasonably priced) and there’s a quiet policy during the performance. There’s a $12 cover and sets are at 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30pm. This is a small venue, so reservations are suggested. Call 212-529-5945 or visit http://lalanternacaffe.com/
